What is Precision Casting and How Does it Work?

OTTOMMO CASTING

Are you aware of precision casting and what it is? Let me explain, Precision casting (also called investment casting, and lost-wax casting) is a metal shaping technique to form near net-shaped products. The standard casting concept is to pour and fill up liquified metal into a disposable ceramic mold. Precision casting is one of the longest metal-shaping techniques.

How does the process work?

The core process of precision casting is mold production and metal casting. In casting foundry, they reuse and recycle waxes and excess metal parts during manufacturing. So, they constantly maximize their product loop inside their  factory.

Mold production

Assemble the wax patterns to make wax pattern trees. Following this, construct the wax pattern trees, develop a metal distribution system, and raise the casting efficiency.

Next off, dip the wax pattern trees into a ceramic slurry, so ceramic coverings coating layer the wax pattern trees. The ceramic coatings adapt the shape of the wax pattern trees and form non-reusable ceramic mold. Later on, dry the mold.

Because thicker coating supplies greater mold toughness, repeat the dipping to enhance the density of ceramic shells. After the very first layer, apply stucco to the ceramic coatings

Remove the waxes from the mold (lost wax). This de-waxing leaves extra cavities for later metal filling.

Following de-waxing, fire the molds before the metal casting. Terminating burns recurring waste inside the molds sinters the molds, and pre-heats the molds for the succeeding metal casting.

Metal casting

1.Melt metal over the melting temperature level. Control and keep an eye on the heating system temperature.

2.Include alloying aspects and slag-catchers to regulate the chemical make-up of the liquified metal if necessary.

3.Put the molten metal to fill up the mold. Control cooling temperature to regulate the microstructure.

4.After the air conditioning, break the mold and cut excess components. Finally, get the metal as-cast item.

The machining phase and completing stage adhere to the metal casting to lead to the end product. Precision casting reduces these phases because the as-cast product form is near-net-shape of the final product.

Why is precision casting or lost-wax casting essential?

Generally, precision casting or lost-wax casting is a manufacturing service to take on industrial difficulties. The design versatility of this casting technique allows the manufacture of a wide variety of products, ranging in shapes and sizes. This strategy is also more appropriate nowadays because wonderful  products require a detailed form with high dimensional resistance and repeatability. On top of that, the smooth surface area of the as-cast products is an included worth of precision casting or lost wax casting.
